So I installed a Debian 3.0 box. And didn't install a graphical interface. I wanted to upgrade to the unstable and all that jazz before wasting the bandwidth.

So I did... and I installed KDE 3.2 and KDM to manage it etc etc.... and it all seems good to me, but I still get the console whenever I startup.

It has the line
Starting K Desktop Manager: kdm.

Just above my login, but nothing comes up... so I'm guessing I have no XServer?

Any ideas?

Scratch that, I found it... X just wasn't installed at all... surprised KDM didn't gripe about no X Server, but hey what can you do.

Are you sure, that X isn't installed?
Did you try 'startx' at the prompt?
Perhaps only your inittab specifies to start in console-mode by default.
