When I started developing a long time ago, I started on my own personal homepage on GeoCities (before Yahoo! ruined things, but that's an entirely different story). Then, I moved to a friend's server, and now I have things on my college's site. However, now that I've been learning more involved things like Java (for JSP) and SQL, I want to start getting more involved. However, I'm not sure what my server-side options are, considering I'm not in charge of what technology goes on the server.

How might I find out what's currently on the college servers? If I needed to request that technology (for JSP or SQL or whatnot) be added, how might I do that? Who would I talk to? And if it comes to the point that I'd like to develop something that can not be done on the college server, where would the best place to do that be? The server-side stuff I want to do currently would be CGI w/Perl, Java (servlets and JSP), and SQL (Oracle, maybe) database programming. I haven't ever gotten into ColdFusion, but that's something I might want to look into some time too.
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
"How might I find out what's currently on the college servers?" ---> ask either the server itself (well ... *if* you have the access to it AND the admin password !!) or the sys admin ;]

"If I needed to request that technology (for JSP or SQL or whatnot) be added, how might I do that?" ---> usually, to add server side technology, you have to set it on the server (actually, as far as i know - and i know only netscape admin - it's only declaring a new mime type)

" Who would I talk to? " ---> i guess you have to go & talk to the sys admin of your college !!

"And if it comes to the point that I'd like to develop something that can not be done on the college server, where would the best place to do that be?" ---> i cant tell right now, but there are some providers who allow quite a lot of technology - i could search for some if nobody else can answer you (that would surprise me tho !!!)

" I haven't ever gotten into ColdFusion, but that's something I might want to look into some time too. " ---> you should ;))) it's definitly not as fun as trying to understand the DOM but i think you can do some interesting stuff with ;]]]
oh and that is a technology i know how to set !!! you first have to install (well .. also buy ....) the coldfusion server and then declare the new mime type (coldfusion!) to the server you use so that it knows how to process your files

miss_lezard@bigfoot.com

Thanks.. is there a default email address (like webmaster is usually webmaster@site.com) for sys admins? I'm not sure how to go about finding out who my sys admin is, or how to contact him/her.
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
just break your computer and/or the server and he'll run to you ;)))
no, i don't know about default adresses for sys admin ... usually sysadmins are hidden near the servers tho ;))
ask your teachers they should know (especially those who watch you while you code)

miss_lezard@bigfoot.com

well I'd preferably like to get in touch with somebody over the summer rather than wait until classes...
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
I tracked down this page <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> and it seems that there are some people with the title of "Systems Administrator" on there. Which one might be the best to contact, would you think?
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
i haven't seen anyone likely to help you in this - but i have to say that we are moving right now and i didn't look carefully (no time !!!)
try to ask any secretary who she calls when her machine doesn't work : she probably calls some system administrator - and both secretary & sysadmin work in summer ;]]]
good luck

miss_lezard@bigfoot.com
