Where to start? Broker Reciprocity/MLS

I am building a website...real estate website for a family member...I want to be able to access the MLS from the site but I have no idea where to start...I have no problem putting in the time and effort to learn the skills in order to do this..but I don't know where to begin. For instance, I will be accessing an external database...do I need to create a search form for that or do I need to create some type of database on my site to access the MLS? I just don't have a clue!!
If anyone could extend some knowledge I would appreciate it.
I do know that I get a code from the MLS that will have to be modified... I have Linux hosting...but I don't know what programming language to use.

If you're talkn about the multiple listing service, you'll need to contact the entity that owns it.

If its the MLS kept by the National Association of Realtors (where i use to work), contact your local REALTOR association or state REALTOR association maybe they can help you.
