Hi,

Wanted to know about the above. I've got some software that only seems to run correctly on win95 and a machine that is running win98 SE that is freezing sporadically.

Any suggestions regarding troubleshooting freezing problems with win98 SE would be appreciated as well.

Thanks,

Russ

you cant get "copies" of either OS legally unless you buy them right out of the store. You may be able to find Win98 (non-SE) in stores, though I feel they'll be replacing them with WinMe on the shelves (which I feel to be worse)

In the past, if it was a problem with the OS itself, and it was Microsoft, remeber the 3 Rs , Reboot, Reformat, Reinstall

That was what I meant by "copies," I didn't mean "pirated copies."

Unfortunately, I've already tried reinstalling the OS and reformatting several times.

Thanks for your reply.

btw what kind of software are you using, it just may be that if it was made for win95 but crashes in 98, its going to always happen based on the way the developers coded it.

It's some proprietary software written in Visual Basic. It ran fine on another machine with an older version of Win98, but the Win98 SE machine I have it installed on now keeps freezing.

Admittedly, the programs are memory hogs, but they never caused the previous Win98 system, that had much less RAM and was generally inferior, to freeze.

At first I thought the CPU might be getting too hot so I installed some heat-sensing cooling fans in it which did nothing to improve the situation. I've also tried fooling around with the virtual memory settings to no avail.

I've located through web searches several instances of people having freezing problems with Win98 SE specifically and I'm starting to get to the point where I'd rather just install a fresh copy of the old Win98 or even go back to Win95 than spend any more time troubleshooting it.
