I needed to uninstall IE6 from an NT machine in order for it to access an elearning site. That went fine. Version 2 was reinstalled by the operating system. I have a copy of 5.5 and 5.01 on the network but both versions say they are not for my Operating System (NT4 SP6a) and want to go to Microsoft's site to download the proper version. This just ain't gonna happen with version 2. (Government proxy server) I need to use another computer to find and download either ver 5 or 5.5 for NT. I can only find service packs for these and not the actual files. Any ideas?

Here is the answer to your uninstall problem:
Internet Explorer Reverts to Version 2.0 After You Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 on Windows NT 4.0 SP6a
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 for Windows
NT 4.0

Internet Explorer 5.x Downloads:

If you uninstalled IE 6 due to problems, did you try windowsupdates.microsoft.com for the VML and Java Machine update (Virtual Machine)? It will usually work after these are installed

Hope this helps...

Tried the Tucows site ..... it only lets you download the setup file which will need connectivity to the internet already from the NT machine in order to download the rest. At this time it only has IE2 which does not have the complexity to specify using a proxy server.
The Microsoft site will only let me download updates, service packs, etc. not the complete set of files. There is no place to ask for the IE5 program itself.
This is the crux of my dilemma.

All you need is the setup file for starters.

Start the setup program.
Accept the agreement.
Select Custom Install
Select Advanced.
Select Download only (and specify OS).

Then select the components you need.

The files needed will be downloaded. joegz

Yes, as JOEGZ wrote, just go to either a network machine or one with CDRW. Use the IE5 setup program to get to your options. I download the version I need to an IE5 folder on our server so I can access it by any workstation. You can also copy & burn a cd.

Just choose advanced > download only > OS
It will down load a FULL install (only option), but when you have all the files, and run the install, you can choose full or select options you want.

Here is also the Windows NT link for downloads:

Hope this helps...[thumbsup2]

Thanx to both Joegz and Harddrivecafe, I am installing as we speak. I vaguely recall this same problem from a while back, but I must be low on resources because I could not remember how I overcame it previously.
Thanx again!
