OK, I imagine it is right in front of my face, but I've looked high and wide and can't seem to find the update to fix the flaws in mozilla firefox browser. I have never had any problems finding any other updates, so I must have substained some serious 'drain bamage' just lately.

thanks and then can I delete the older versions? That is strange that they make one download a whole another version instead of just patching the old version. Seems like a waste of time, but I assume there is a good reason

I have that checked 'Yes', but it didn't do a automatic update, unless it does it without telling me. So if I went that method, maybe I wouldn't have had to download the whole software? Just a fix for the java problems?

You must download the whole version, there are not only patches, it is not so much, MS IE cumulative patches are about same size. Uninstall previous version if you don't want to see it in Add/Remove. All settings will be kept, its painless.
