I do not know apples at all.
I have a g4 with os9 and want to know how to access
a console, if there is one

What would you like to do at a console? perhaps I can reccomend a GUI program that does that?

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I have heard that Apple has *nix commands now and I just wanted to do a little testing and exploring to see if this type of a system would benefit our office at all.
Can you upgrade a g4 with OS9 to OSx??

Yes, all G4s are OSX capable with enough RAM, I reccomend at least 512 meg for a pleasent experience.

Womp,

To fill in what others have said, OS 9.x was the last release of the Mac "Classic" operating system, which was not based on Unix.

The 10.x series is based on Next/FreeBSD/Mach. The newest version, 10.3, plays quite nicely in Windows and/or Linux environments.

For just fooling around and learning, I don't think you need 512 Mb of ram, 128 would do. Be warned that if you run any "productivity" apps like Office or Photoshop, you will want the additional RAM.
