Avira anti-virus keeps warning me of a suspected virus in the Temporary Internet files folder. But I can't find that folder. IE7 "help" says to look in the General tab in Tools -> Internet Options but there is no such tab in IE7.

What I have found in D & S -> userid -> Local Settings is a folder named Temp . But that doesn't match the foldername (Temporary Internet Files) from Avira. Nor does it have the sub-folders in the warning message.

What is the real name of the folder and where is it? (running under XP 5.1 SP2)

Thank you - your assistance will be appreciated.

It's the first tab. The one that allows you to change your home page, delete cookies and temp files, etc.

Here a couple of ways for you to access your "Temporary Internet Files". The first will allow you access the folder from within IE7. The latter two using Windows Explorer.

To access the folder from within IE7, click the 'Tools' menu and select 'Internet Options'. On the 'General' tab under 'Browsing History', click 'Settings'. This will bring up the "Temporary Internet Files and History Settings" options. Click on the 'View Files' button to open the folder in Windows Explorer and see the files currently being stored.

To open the folder straight from Windows Explorer if the "Temporary Internet Files" folder is not visible when looking under the "Local Settings" folder, just complete the path in the address bar in Explorer.

For example just type the following path in the address bar in Windows Explorer:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Or, you could just open up Windows Explorer and simply type the following in the address bar:

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

There is also some hidden folders that you may view after you see the list of files in the Temporary Internet Files.

Just click on the "View" button on the Window displaying the Temporary Internet Files, click "Toolbars" then click "Address Bar". Now you see your file location on the address bar. Just add \content.ie5 and press the Enter key.

Should look like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

You may see the other hidden Folders of Temporary Internet Files.

Using CCleaner will help make it easier for you to safely delete the these hidden folders and files in the future.

Good Luck!

The General Tab is not there in IE7 because it's turned off by Microsoft - yet another wonderful Microsft design feature!!

I found this in another thread as to how to get it back:

Rick998 (IS/IT--Management)

to use the Group Policy editor instead, do the following:

1) Enter 'gpedit.msc' in the "Start > Run" dialog.

2) Navigate to the lower "User Configuration" area in the left-hand pane.

3) Open "Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Internet Control Panel".

4) In the right-hand pane, you should see "Disable the General page" is set to "Enabled". Change it back to its default "Not Configured", apply the change and close the Editor.

Again, the change is dynamic ('Apply' forces a refresh).

Now I can see the Temp Internet files.

Thank you (and stars to)nteldata , IllogicallyLogical and JPaules for your help. And I will download CCcleaner.

IE7 certainly has a 'General' Tab...It usually is the one that is showing when you select 'Internet Options' from the Tools menu.

On that main tab, select the 'Settings' button in the Browsing History section ( like was posted by IllogicallyLogical ) then select View Files

Turkbear - Sorry but that General tab was NOT there. I had to turn it on. It's not on anyone else's IE7 that I've checked, either. Perhaps Microsoft changed somethings in Windows registry from one update to another - one never knows what they are changing - and that's why you and IllogicallyLogical have it turned on by default. But at least on my version and those with whom I checked, Microsoft had it turned off as the default.

Hi,
all I can say is, it is the default tab showing when I select Tools..Internet Options.
My version of IE7 is:

7.0.5730.13

if that helps...

The tabs are
General, Security,Privacy, Content,Connections,Programs, Advanced.

I turned nothing on after installing the Update to 7.
I have installed all the updates, I think, from Microsoft but that tab has been there from the start.

I have a general tab on all the machines in the immediate vicinity, by default.

It is always available and shown as default. There are no MS updates that apply Group Policies. Group Policies are applied by the administrator or user and occasionally by some malware. It might be worthwile to run a couple of free online virus scanners faq760-3862
