Where exactly is the location of the Local database?

When you use the Upsizing Wizard to upsize an Access db to SQL and create an *.adp file, you are prompted: What SQL Server would you like to use for this database?

My question is: What exactly does (local) mean? (Local being the SQL Server location of the new .adp). If I'm distributing this app to multiple users, is local a good choice?

I should have been more specific with my questions:

Is it okay to choose the local SQL server to use if you are distributing your .adp file to multiple users? Or does local imply that basically the server is only local to your current adp file which you are working with. IE - Once you distribute the app that local database will no longer be local. Or if I am distributing an application, should I use an SQL Instance if possible instead of the local one?

Does that make sense? Am I overthinking this whole process?

Thanks.

Local refers to the localhost which is on your PC if you have installed a version of sql server on your PC. When you distribute the app it will connect to the server which is running sql server that contains the database the application (adp) is using.

cmmrfrds,

I have SQL 2000 Personal installed on the PC. Since my project is using SQL 2000's local db as the database, do I need to use MSDE when I package the application for installation at users' workstations?

Thanks.

If you plan on giving each user their personal copy of the database, but not if the database is located on another server that is used by multiple users. There will need to be client side software but that should come with Microsoft Office. It has been awhile since I have installed sql server and tools since I am mostly working with Oracle and Crystal Reports now.
