The problem is I can play movie clips (avi, mpeg) on my downstairs computer, but I cant play them on my upstairs computer. It's because the upstairs one isnt connected to the internet, and cant download the needed codecs. So my question is; where are the codecs located on a windows computer? Are they some sort of .dll? If I could just find them and transfer them to the upstairs computer, I would be all set. Does anyone know anything about this?

p.s. I know this isnt really related to visual basic, but this is my favorite forum!

I scanned the registry for "codec" and found several references to files with a ".ax" extension in \Windows\System. Most also had a companion file called "??????ax.inf", probably related to installing/uninstalling.

what you can do is download windows media player downstairs, the latest version from microsoft( ), which will have all the codecs, and using a compression program like winrar ( ), transfer it upstairs and use it happily with all codecs installed. it's slow, but will get any you might miss if you copy each one manually, and there's no guarantee that will work anyway
