where does the font come from for font-family

When you say font-family: arial;

Does the font come from the persons pc or from the server?

Person's computer. That means, if they do not have that font, the browser becomes confused in what to show to the client. That is why you should always specify a generic font family along with your fonts.

When you specify font-family in CSS, you can list as many as you want and the client's browser will go down the list until it finds the font that exists on the computer
