Where do you install your 3rd party components?

Delphi 2007 creates and store projects in the Documents folder, instead of Program Files folder like earlier versions.

So I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to install any 3rd party components in the same Documents folder. I used to install it in the Lib folder.

I think it's a matter of taste.
I always create a directory "components" in the delphi directory.
My projects are stored in the "projects" directory (also in the delphi dir, mind that I have 3 different delphi versions on the same PC).
when I have to reinstall a delphi installation, I backup my projects and components dir, so I can restore them quickly.
Nice and clean...

Interesting to note ...
when I have to reinstall a delphi installation
I thought people generally install applications like Delphi, Office, etc, once and thats it. If I have to do a reinstall, I generally reinstall the OS from a backup which I have created of a basic windows install.

As I have 2 hard drives, I might install the 3rd party components on the second drive. This way, when I do a reinstall, the components and projects are already there.

If you don't install components to the default path, then Delphi might need to know where they are by making changes on the project directories tab.

Re-install
You might get a new computer, suffer a catastrophic loss of data. Install a newer version, several reasons to re-install, all to be avoided if at all possible though!

example nightmare...
I just re-installed on my new Vista Machine, not without problems. I got hold of an updated version of the EHS Help router. This has a fancy self-installer, but then it wouldn't compile, missing definitions.
I had to import the dcu from the old install to get a working situation back.

not every computer has 2 harddrives. I change laptops every year, so I reinstall often, like I said, it's a matter of taste, and this works best for me...

If you start changing computers, which depends how long you have been involved, it is handy to put your files/data in a folder called Data.
In case of disaster, and the repair calls in with the message: "Your hard drive failed, but we can rescue some files".... It is easy to point where to look, instead of going over there and examine the "program files" directories or anything linked to a specific user

my first computer was a
8088 without hard drive...
