Hi All,

I need to create a mailing system for a 2 local offices connected via a router, so that each user in the office can send and receive mail to each other.

I only can use either freebsd or Linux Redhat.
Can anyone direct me, where to start?

The offices have no mailbox or no access to the internet.
Everything is basically local to them. So I would I guess have to create some sort of mailbox and create pop and smtp server.
But where do I begin and what is a good software to start with. A lot of people are talking about sendmail and or qmail, which one is more trouble free and solid to use?
Thank you.

i would suggest the latest version of sendmail and qpopper as your pop daemon. as for the os you should use that is really user specific. it's really about what you want to use. i like rh7.1, but other love mdk8. the setup is really quite easy. make your mail server and put it on any side of the router. the setup should be pretty much pre-configured to work. in your case if you are not running a dns server locally i would just use the ip address of your machine as the pop3 and smtp server on your clients machine in their e-mail account setup. you really need to install everything first and start from there. here is a good newbie sendmail setup guide.

it's for a home network, but your situation is pretty much the sam as a home-user except more machines. also as long as you have the correct gateway setup on the machines on the network opposite the network the mail server is on, there shouldn't be any special setup for those clients to connect to the mail server.
