Where do I stand on setting up a website of personal favourites. Ie. I might look at setting up a top ten of films, or top ten of albums - can I do this ?
I mean, am I allowed to name the films, albums, artists, actors, etc. or do I need to seek permissions to do this ?
I'm also looking at introducing a forum for people to leave comments about the lists (mentioned above) as voted on by site visitors. People can leave remarks as to why they don't like a certain film, or add their own favourites.
Can anyone shed any light on this before I get stuck in ?
Thanks in advance.

Unless you are burning the film and uploading copyrighted material you will be fine. DeZiner

And listing favourites ?
And explaining why one film is better than another ?
Or actors for that matter ?
Thanks again.

Hi,

You can link to any site without asking permission however:
1. you should not make a link which misrepresents what is being linked to.
2. or implies a relationship with the linked site if a relationship does not exist

I also don't think there is any problem listing movies, albums, actors etc etc. However, if people will be leaving comments I suggest that you write a disclaimer for you site. Also, if you plan to use any images check the copyrights.

If u need a disclaimer you can steal mine and modify it. It's not very good but will help u get started.

Thanks - I think I will make use of your disclaimer - as long as its not copyrighted ... ;)
Is there any site where I can obtain images of actors, characters and the like that are not copyrighted that perhaps I could use ?
Thanks again.

Hi Steve,

This is probably impossible. I would assume that ALL images of actors etc are probably copyrighted. You could do a quick net search for free images, or you could consider contacting the respective companies but this is difficult.

I am not sure how copyrighting works if you modify an image though. Worth looking at.

Here's a simple rule - if you use anything that is copyrighted, you're OK as long as you don't use it for monetary gain, you do not reprint it and redistribute it without acknowlegement, and you do not modify it in any way.

In the case of images of of movie stars, they must have a copyright stamp on the image. Otherwise, they're considered public domain. (You still can't modify them or misrepresent them.) There's always a better way...

Where would I stand on naming fictional characters ?
Would the comment "Batman is the best superhero" get me into problems with trademarks / copyrights or am I entitled to voice my opinion without infringing on any potential problems ?
Thanks again.
