Now that Hentzenwerke Publishing no longer publishes FoxPro books and since attendance at foxpro conferences continues to dwindle, I again start to wonder whether my beloved FoxPro will soon be no more. Considering Foxpro's strengths, where would a VFP developer go as an alternative? What other products have the sophisticated database capabilities (SQL), runtime module, support for shared applications, sophisicated OOP and error trapping. I hate to even ask the question.

I wouldn't bail out on fox quite yet. However, if you put all your eggs in one basket you limit yourself. That is true whether it is fox, access, vb, etc..

Loomis,

You don't mention the most important factor: your personal circumstances. Are you a freelance developer or consultant? Do you have a salaried job? Are you expecting to be looking for a job in the near future?

If you are a consultant or freelance, there is only only one possible answer to your question. The only development tools you should consider adopting are those that for which there is a market among you clients.

Never mind what is sophisticated or what has advanced features. Find out what your clients (actual and potential) want and go with that.

Personally, I am happy to back VFP for a long time yet. I don't see any diminishing in demand for my services as a VFP programmer and trainer. It doesn't make a jot of difference to me if Whil Hentzen is making money out of Foxpro books -- that's got nothing to do with my market.

I'd love to advise you to do the same. But what's right for me isn't necessarily right for you. Look at your market and them make your decision.
