Hi

If I want to see all the configuration of SUN system, what files and where do they locate for me to see all the information?
- I know how to use "format" to see how the physical disk is set up, I also use df -k, look at the vfstab file, but what else should I have to know more to understand completely the system?
- what's about /etc/format.dat file is doing? Is it just a file to define hardware for SUN series, but not actually the file contains the system configuration? Am I right?

Thanks.

babeo,
1. I suggest you get a copy of a system admin book. /etc & /sbin are where syetm files & executables files are located. /etc traditionally contains most of the administration commands & some are in /sbin & /usr/sbin

2. format command would help to know what disks are on your system and you can print out the layout of the partitons. Also always checking who has accounts & what crons might be running is a great place to start (allowing you to know what is running on your system) Check /etc/init.d for what types of scripts are starting on boot.

3. Format utility also works with a file called /etc/format.dat The file is a table of availbe disk types and set of opredefined partions tables that you can use to partition a disk quickly.

Hope that helps with your questions. Good luck!

There's a utility available at that I use to create a text & html file containing most of the system's configuration information. It should cover most areas & reading the script will let you know what files/commands were used to generate each piece of information.

- To unixkid :
What is the best book of unix system admin, could you suggest?

- To ayjaycee:
I download the software already, and take a look inside it, not sure, but afraid to run it because I don't have a test system to run the script, but it's a life and production system. I am afraid it may kill some processes. How is it running on your system? Is it safe to run it? Where is the out file is put ? and how to use the out file (on UNIX or on PC browser) ?

Thanks all.

Depends on what platform your running. But without that infomation I would say O'Reilly Essentail System Admin book & Unix System Admin handbook (ISBN 0-13-020601-6) The Unix System Admin book covers all unix & linux from head to toe.

The cfg2html shouldn't harm your system - it just runs commands that query the configuration of your system & then builds a report file (txt & html formats). But, as with all new programs, you're right to be cautious ;-)

I've hacked my version a little, but I think the original writes it's output to the directory you're in when you run the script.

The text file is useful for putting in your System Documentation folder, copied in your data safe too. The html file can be put on any web server or local PC. Mine get's integrated into my server monitor - BigBrother - which I can highly recommend B-) TandA
