i need to check that DMA is enabled but in the system-devices-properties the hard disk settings do not have a DMA check box like ms98, so where is it.
Another thing DMA resources say that only the floppy and 'DMA controller' are active is the controller the hard disk? i'm lost.

First off,
What is the DMA?
I just went and checked on Windows 98se, and mine is unchecked. Is this a good thing? Dodge Charger

The controller sits before the hard drive, ie operates the hard drive.

DMA is Direct Memory Access usually used for DVD-Rom software, for better quicker performance, in ME if you go through "system properties", and then select the hard drive, open hidden menu to change the settings

b-ster,

Are you using an add-in IDE controller card? If so, this may be why you don't see the DMA settings. Most modern controller cards natively support Ultra DMA. Because of this, the option to enable it is not necessary and should be enabled automatically.

Dodge Charger,

DMA should always be enabled for hard drives, assuming they are on their own channel. If you currently have a DVD/CDROM or other ATAPI device sharing the same IDE controller, you don't always want to force the hard drive to use DMA. Doing that could slow everything on that channel down.

Also like inspectag mentioned, the same applies to DVDROM drives. Usually to get the fastest transfer rates (like when watching movies), you should enable DMA. Again, it is usually better if the DVDROM is not sharing the channel unless other devices are "DMA-compatible".
