Hi, I just upgraded to a new puter. I installed Corel Draw and pulled my saved corel file from the old HDD to the new HDD. The old HDD was set up as slave. Anyway...when I went to bring up a saved corel file, I was shown a box which stated that the fonts (listed about 4) were not found and asked me if I wanted to use the substitutes. Well I would prefer to keep the old fonts. Where did they go? What do I need to do to get the fonts recognized?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you install the fonts to the new HDD? It sounds like you left them on your old HDD.

On your old HDD -> C:\windows\fonts - copy the entire folder to disk (CD or Floppy), and copy them into your new 'puters HDD in the same folder. Xp will install all the fonts automatically, if I recall, 98 has to install the fonts manually - could be mistaken on that though.

Ok, I put the old hdd as a slave and went to its "windows" file, then to the fonts file. I clicked on the fonts file and did not see any of these fonts that are missing. Should I still copy the font file over? I am totally at a loss as to where these fonts are. Please advise.

I just came upon a new problem. I went to check on the fonts folder and saw that there were 1200 fonts! I made a folder on the desktop and pulled all the fonts but 500 of them from the windows fonts folder. The fonts I was missing are all there however Corel doesn't see them. I then installed the font manager from the Corel disc but it would not let me pull the fonts over from the left side to the right. Could you please explain to me why that is and how do I get them to be recognized in Corel.

Thanks

Unless the fonts are in the winnt\fonts folder, the OS does not "see" them. It sounds like you've done some hosing of your system with the way you're trying to get things working. Your best bet would be to wipe your drives and start over.

Well this puter is the church's puter and everything else is working just fine so I would really hate to totally reformat and start over if at all possible.

I am not sure how the Bitstream Navigator is suppose to work but it does find all those fonts but it keeps saying "Unable to install Fonts". What does that mean and why? I was thinking of deleting the fonts folder that I made on the destop then uninstalling Corel and then Reinstalling it using the custom and having it install Bitstream right out of the gate and then opening a new Doc in Corel and have it find the fonts....and then hopefully when I open a saved Corel file, it will ask me where to look for the missing fonts and then I can pop the Corel Cd in and have it look there. Right now it is not giving me an option to find them. Any help, suggestions would be great.

well, you should never store files in a folder on the desktop - shortcuts are fine, but never files - especially if on NT, W2K, or WXP and these files need to be shared with others (due to permissions issues). I'm not trying to sound rude, but it really sounds like someone who didn't really know what they were doing started moving drives and folders around on the system and that they messed something up. Without knowing *everything* that was done and being able to restore back to the way it was before someone messed it all up, your best bet is to wipe it and reinstall everything so you can be sure that it's back to a clean system.

Unless the fonts are in the winnt\fonts folder, the OS does not "see" them.

These were not system fonts, these were fonts that were from the Corel Draw CD. All I did was move them out of the Window Fonts folder into another folder on the desktop. I did not move any system fonts ie. Marlett ttf.

I can go to Word and these fonts are seen and I can use them, it is the Corel Draw that I cannot, so as far as them needing to be in the Window Fonts Folder or the OS won't see them, I don't know about that. That is why I installed the Fonts Navigator which is suppose to handle all the archiving of these fonts and take them out put them back....I just need to know how to get it to work. What does it mean about "unable to install font" Why? I am sorry if I am coming across as being a dunce but I am not. I have already run SFC and have found nothing that was really wrong.

Gracious:

You have to first copy the fonts in the windows folder so you don't lose them.( to A cd )
2nd....You can't have more than 500 fonts installed. You may have over 15,000 saved on the pc, actually only having 150 installed is better for the PC. YOu have to delete the fonts the are NOT computer fonts. LIKE the fonts that are screen fonts. They have an A and are in RED. ( and if you delete the wrong files, YOU have already saved them to a disc.( correct?)
3rd.Place all of the True type fonts Or the Type 1 fonts, Choose only one or the other Not both.
Place the fonts you want to use in a NEW SEPARATE folder on the hard drive. If you use fonts from CD's MAKE sure you coPY them into the NEW folder. ( make sure they have the read only property UNCHECKED on all the fonts you add.

4th. Find the file fontnav.fdb and delete it.
This file is the wizard that will let you re-add the fonts. You aren't able to add any more fonts because you have too many installed. If you follow the steps you should be down to 150 fonts and able to add any that you want.
If the fonts are not in the right folder, you will not be able to view them in the font navigator.

:)

Janeimg, thank you for the reply.
When you say "Place all of the True type fonts Or the Type 1 fonts, Choose only one or the other Not both." how do I know if I have both? Is there a way to tell. Some of the fonts when I click on font menu, show up as lumps, meaning in the preview, the letters are all smushed together and when I click on that font to use it in the corel application, there is no text but I can change it to another font that is not all jumbled and it is fine. I was thinking that maybe I have a bunch of corrupted fonts or that maybe some of these fonts are in there as Type 1 or ttf. I don't know how to check. The fonts in the desktop folder are the fonts from the Corel CD, and I only have win98 system fonts in the windows fonts file. I will try to delete the fontnav.fdb and then move the desktop folder somewhere else on c: and have fontnav start over. Do I need to worry about the fonts copied from the CD to the desktop folder being "read only". How do I make sure they are not.
I really appreciate all your advice and help. Thank you!
