Where a password stored in windows?

Where does a password stored in Windows when we checked the "Remember password" on normal windows application? For example, Outlook Express Application.
 
It gets stored in a secure database.

On my Windows 9x machine my Outlook Express password, the ****** password, is stored here:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager\Accounts\00000005]
"POP3 Password2"=hex:01,02,70,00,6f,00,73,00,74...

I verified it by deleting the value and putting it back with a .reg file. When I merged the data, the password/asterisks were there. When I deleted the value, the asterisks would be absent. I figured this out using RegMon, a free tool from
