They're on sata1 and sata2 (or maybe 0 and 1, who knows). The d: is my old c:, and when installing the new c:, it set up a boot menu to select. But when I pull the d: vista won't boot anymore. I keep forgetting to write the message down, but it's fairly unspecific, please insert bootable media or something. I did msconfig and deleted the reference to the d: and clicked make permanent, reboot, still won't boot if I pull the sata to the d:. Any ideas? I'm trying to avoid running repair off the god forsaken vista install dvd and having to scrounge drivers to stick on a thumb drive, cuz my mobo is swank like that.

Oooh that looks promising. I knew about bcdedit, but I didn't think to look for command line switches. Thank you, I'll try it out when I get home.

It sounds like your BOOT files are located on the D drive, and by pulling it, it can't boot...

fix, is to pull the D drive, set it aside...

then follow Linney's suggestion, in using the Vista CD and do the STARTUP REPAIR... which should rewrite the BOOT files onto the C drive...
