What is the -HUP in killall -HUP for, and when is it good to use it?

Yes, the -hup for kill or killall tells the daemon or process to restart, just as -1 does. It is a gentler way of shutting down a process, and telling it to restart. For daemons, I prefer to use the restart option (i.e. smbd restart), if it is started . If you type the wrong option with the kill/killall commands, you can shut it down improperly, and leave yourself with some improperly closed files. Either will work, just a practice I prefer.
