when to use baseline grid or guides

If I create a guide system for a doccument is it worth using align baseline grid still, I recently created a doccument with lots of squares and it got complicated to try and use both as the guide system didnt fall to the baseline increments. Should baseline grid always be used where possible?
 
...not always and not for everything, but a baseline will certainly help for long documents, keeping your body copy in line from one side of a page to another...

...a baseline is for body copy alignment based upon a predefined leading value, the general rule for body text is point size of text + 3pt to give you a leading value (12pt + 3pt = 15pt leading), this is not set in stone by any means, as you can often find you need less leading for larger typefaces...
