I have windows xp and I know I can't uninstall tcp/ip. I was told to use the netsh command to reset the tcp/ip stack if I troubleshoot all the cord connections and I'm still still getting 169.x.x.x ip address. Is that correct?

For XP, you can't uninstall TCP/IP (Uninstall is grayed out). You will use the Windows XP command line utility netsh.exe to reset all IP-related Registry settings to their default values. To do that, enter the command: netsh int ip reset filename, for example, netsh int ip reset ipreset.t.xt.
