When rebooting any DC, entire network is taken to its knees!

I don't quite understand it....

I have 2 domain controllers in my main site and 1 each at 3 other branches. The DC in the main site host all FSMO rolls, 2 on 1 and 3 on another.

When I reboot a DC in the main site, the entire network freezes. As soon as the DC is back up, everything resolves itself.

The other day, a DC in one of our branches was down and it crippled everyone. Printing was slow, logins were slow, etc.

Where would I begin? GCs? FSMO roles? DNS? I'm at a loss.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Most likely dns, the only role that can cause some issues in a short time is the pdc and thats only under certain circumstances.

All DCs should be GC and DNS. Start there. FSMO isn't an issue.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

nothing can authenticate if you are rebooting a server with the only GC (default). Make sure you have another GC (sites and services and right click a NTDS setting on a server I think).

OK. I had 1 server that wasn't a GC. I'll continue to monitor.
