When I "q" out of a display/editor app like vi, the display buffer disappears on the screen...as opposed to what was being displayed remaining on the
this is under os 6100-02.

Where is this behavior controlled?

The nightmare that is the AIX console continues...

Satisfied with the pain of the old serial console days... IBM found there was no scope for such pain in these HMC / virtual terminal days (except for the painful HMC termianl problems introduced in HMC V7 of course) so they have gone to extrodinary lengths and now have managed to introduce such pain into the native network terminal with AIX 6 and beyond...

IBM says you can just set your TERM to xterm-old or xterm-r6 but no, sadly this only helps with a few of the problems.

Most people seem to resort to copying the old terminal definitions from a 5.3 machine to save them selves the pain...

Try copying /usr/share/lib/x/ from an AIX 5.3 system onto AIX 6 and all should return to normal... until the next SP / TL update at least!

when you use putty, also this does the trick:

Putty --> Terminal --> Features --> Disable switching to alternate terminal screen
