for some reason or another, its giving me that message...
well, not exactly that message i dont think, but in any case, its similar.
any ideas?

I'm pretty sure i checked the right com port in the setup... I remember looking in the control panel in windows, and it said my modem was using com4

I checked that one in the mandrake setup.

WOuld that have anything to do with it?

TIA

What kind of modem is this?
Are you sure it's jumpered for Com4?
What IRQ does it use?
Is the IRQ the same as one being used by any other device? Cheers,
Jim

its a "US robotics 56k Fax Win Int" modem. it runs in a pci slot

its actually com3, (which i even reinstalled linux, and chose com3 for the modem)
But anyways, it still gives me the same error.

i have no idea what irq it uses. I tried checking in my bios, but i didnt see anything...

It's a winmodem, and relies on the Windows kernel to initialize and run. Winmodems also create and use a virtual IRQ, through windows software. It will NEVER work in Linux. Period. Cheers,
Jim
