Hello out there, I have already tried the hardware forums and they sent me here. Hopefully some one here can help. I have a computer running Win98 that started acting up after a bad storm and the power went out. It took out my cable modem comptetly. So, I replaced the modem and then my computer started rebooting on a frequent basis. The next step I took was disabling my onboard ethernet 10/100 through the systemboard BIOS and installed a PCI 10/100 card. Still I am having the same results. Now, this is what gets me, if I unplug the ethernet cable, the computer runs fine with no problems or rebooting. Then when I plug the ethernet connection back in, some times it will work fine for a little while, but it eventually starts to sparatically reboot. Also, I tried a different power supply, and memory. Any suggestions? You time is greatly appreciated.

I'd suggest running a virus scan with the latest updates. I have seen a worm which causes the phenomena you have described.

If your OS is NT4, Win2k or XP then I agree with Claudek. Are you sure you're running Win98?

open your command prompt and type shutdown -a then run the sasser virus removal tool. I would be more than willing to bet that is your issue. Let us know how it turns out.
Also are you getting any kind of error such as LSASS.EXE when it starts to shutdown?

if a virus scan does not help check for spyware as well
adaware is good for general clean up I spy bot seems good for real time protection.
