When I type the number 1. and press the Tab, the paragraph indents

When I am using numbered parapgraphs, I type the number 1 followed by a period. Then I press the tab key. Rather than indenting the first line, it indents the entire paragraph. I know how to correct this problem on a document by document basis, but I am looking to correct this problem on a global basis. Help will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Click the numbers button down arrow and then click "Other". Choose the second last style (I'm using WP9, so it might not be in the same position). In your codes, it will show as parastyle:legal(tab)1

The numbering button will be mid-row to the right of the highlighter button. You can also add Formatting, Property Bar etc. to customize your menus.

I found the button but when I click the down arrow immediately to the right, I see 4 difference sytles of numbering and a button labeled more. When I click on more, the outline menu pops up. I see nothing like you have described. I also tried adding the format toolbar but that did not help either. Thanks anyway.
