Hi,
I installed SUS, successfully implemented the GPO to the clients and just recently approved the updates on the server.

The GPO is configured to download and install the updates without user intervention or approval.

Q:
In order to control bandwidth, I'm hoping to know when the updates are going to the clients.

If I approve the updates during the day, when will the client download the updates? That evening? Immediately?

Thanks

Every client has a randomized update time to download the updates.

If you look in the registery under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate and look at the LastWaitTimeOut value. This is the time on the download.

If you look at in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate at the ScheduleInsallTime value, this will tell you the install time.

You might want to look at and look in their FAQ section. They have a lot of information on the registery settings, etc.

On every workstation that is using the GPO for SUS a Windows Update.log file is generated and it shows when the clients are querying the SUS server. You can also look at the iuhist.xml file on each workstation to see what updates are being applied.

Great! I'm going to checkout the susadmin website and find out a way to automate creating a report to know when they are going to update and then deploy a registery update to change the time to one that is suitable.
