When do clients update their status in WSUS

I've currently got 40 clients in my WSUS server, four of which failed to download service pack 2 because of lack of space. I cleaned up the hard drives yesterday so I presume next time the PC's check in with the WSUS server, they will download Service Pack 2 - am I correct? Also, will the the "4 computers have update errors" message go away when they start to download the SP2 file?

Also, some of my clients are failing to download the files because the load on the server appears to be too great - again, when these clients check in with the WSUS server, assuming the load isn't on the server isn't too great, will they begin the download again as normal?

Yes at the next check in they 'should' download the appropriate patches and the error should be cleared, if the error message isn't cleared then you may need to reset the client and clear the software distribution folder.

When you are the IT director, it's your job to make sure the IT works. If it does work they know already and if it doesn't, they don't want to hear your pathetic excuses.

Yea, you were right ... I was just getting impatient !!

Two more questions, if that's OK. For some reason Service Pack 2 is showing as not needed by all my clients in WSUS - some are service pack 2 but majority are service pack 1. The strange thing is, the Service Pack 2 PC's did actually install service pack 2 over the weekend as planned, but WSUS is still saying not needed. If this also just a case of the clients having to check in again for the data to get updated?

Last question ... I have 46 PC's which should have appeared in WSUS, but only 40 appeared (even after running wuauclt /detectnow). The strange thing is, these PC's that wern't there still downloaded and installed the updates. This isn't a case of the clients overwriting each other as I've been marking some of them off on a list as I went along, and there's a few PC's in particular that I know definitely are not in WSUS but did get service pack 2 installed over the weekend. Any ideas?

The clients that downloaded SP2 over the weekend will probably update at the next check in it can take a while.

On the clients that aren't appearing you can use the wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow command to force them to register.

Did you check to see if they share the same SusClientID?

Yea, you were right, they did update the status eventually - it just takes a bit longer than I expected. Some of the clients that wern't showing up are turning up now also. It's not a duplicate SusClientID issue as none of the previous ones are being overwritten - the number of clients is getting higher, but like I said, it's taking alot longer than I expected. It's been four days now and there's at least one that I know for sure still hasn't registered, even though the user is here and their PC is on all day. Really weird huh

Don't know if this has already been stated, but you can also configure the update detection frequency in policy here:

Computer - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Windows Update - Automatic Updates Detection Frequency

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

Yea, I already done that, but thanks anyway. Even if I didn't configure it, the PC's should check in once every 24 hours (approximately) but this one PC just don't seem to want to play !!! It's not a big deal, like I said, they got the updates - it's just bugging me !!

That is a bit odd did you try the wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow command?

If it continues to gove you problems then try Dial a Fix, MS PSS recommend it.
