When adding 'any' doctype causes space

I have a web site that was working fine until I added a doctype as recommended. Thishas caused a space in the title bar of the home page (and I suspect will for other pages also). I have tried every doctype I know. The one included in the attached file has the least distruption.

Does anyone know a way around this as I am now beaten and can think of nothing else. any help would be appreciated as I am loosing face now...

Hi audiopro I have ran this though checker with the result of having 434 Errors, 151 warning(s). Surely the code can'nt be that bad it would take me days to fix all these errors. Is this really required as it would be quicker to start all over again?

The code could be that bad but probably is not as bad as it looks.
Many of those errors relate to images not having alt tags and numerous other basic mistakes. There are some layout errors in there which may or may not cause your errors.
As a rule, getting so many errors indicates that something is fundamentally wrong with your code and you would be better to solve the problems.
Solving a single syntax error can very often solve a number of others so it may not take as long as you think.
The page takes a long time to load so something is very wrong there

The website was created by firstly creating in Photoshop slicing up images and buttons and exporting as HTML. I then created links in Dreamweaver and added text so not really sure how to fix all these errors to be honest, am I stuffed?

No but I would start again if I were you.
Photoshop is fantastic for editing images but is not a web creation tool.
Learn some basic HTML and put individual images into it.

I definatly will not be doing it this way again pointers very much appreciated. Does anyone know a way I can get this page so it does not show spaces as this should have been done last week?

I can't get the page to load up at all as it redirects somewhere and then takes ages to load.
There is not a quick fix to that page.
Many of the errors refer to badly formatted links, there is a lot of code there, is it a big page or just bloated code?

When fixing errors shown by a validator, fix the errors ONE at a time from the TOP down. Fixing the first error often fixes dozens or more errors due to the cascading effect of errors.

Basically, fix the top error. Re-validate. Fix top error. Re-validate. Fix top error. And so on until they are all fixed.

Once the errors have been fixed, you can address style, layout, and other issues without interference from unfixed errors.

Eric, unbelievable comment. You actually took the time to write a post to say I was carless and sloppy! For your information I have never coded in my life and this is the first web site I have ever built. I took advise from a web site (wrongly as it turned out) to create a web site design in Photoshop then slice and export in HTML before modifying in Dreamweaver which seemed plausible at the time. I then took advise from audiopro who advised me against it. That is how forums work I took advise and moved on. Why then did you feel the need to drag your slimy carcass out of your mill pond and try to put me down? If you have nothing positive to add then keep your low grade opinions to yourself.

The comment you refer to is a quote at the bottom of mmerlinn's post and is not an attack on your coding style.
If you are new to creating web pages, start with some basic stuff and get that to validate then as your knowledge increases you can move onto the more complex stuff.
Validation is a great way of tracing sloppy errors and just about everyone makes them. Errors such as unended tags are notorious for making a web page display in a weird way. Trying to trace a single error when a page contains a lot of them is not productive and fixing single errors can even make things appear worse.
