Hi,

I am getting access denied when I try to view...

C:\Users\[my name]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Why?

I can't even change the security , it isn't an option in the context menu?

Cheers,

1DMF

Try this address.

C:\Users\usernamexxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

You can use the "View Files" option in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Browsing History/ Settings/

This might explain why you get the Accessed Denied in your original location you tried, it was told to me by Microsoft staff.

"Here is the reason behind it. "The junctions are there to only provide appcompat for legacy apps and aren’t meant for a user to traverse through. The junctions have been explicitly set to block read through them by setting Everyone Deny Read. The main reason here is because these are just links to the actual location, so you dont want backup tools and other tools operating on your data twice, once from the original path and once via the junctions. There are scenarios where some of these junctions actually form a loop to support the appcompat for the old namespace in comparison to the new and in those cases allowing read through them is disastrous, for e.g. setup was broken for a week when the file system wasnt honorign the deny read.

Also as far as a user goes, you will never see these as they are system hidden, and you will need to take explicit action to see them by default.

I removed the everyone deny read, and the reason i wanted to traverse there is because on an MS thread, that's where it says to go to find the temporary outlook content when you have attachments open.

i had a user who forgot they were in an attachment, made changes and then didn't understand why they lost everything.

I hoped to find the word doc in the temporary 'outlook.content' folder, only we couldn't even open the location given by the thread.

Infact i can't even find the path given in the registry for the outlook secure temp folder, content.outlook doesn't exist?

He has given up and accepted that they have lost their work.

Thanks for the reply.

Read the user comments in this article, especially the ones about Desktop.ini.

Find the Microsoft Outlook temporary OLK folder

The article is Windows 9x related but the story of Desktop.ini and Index.dat files is pretty much applicable to XP. Vista, and Windows 7.

You will find it interesting around paragraph 5 "How Microsoft does it".

If you have the correct address (obtained from the Registry), using that address in the Start RUN box might take you to the hidden location.
