Whats wrong with this httpd.conf - CGI not working.

OK, before I just give up and go back to a WinBlows system, I am going to, once again, ask you folks for help.

After a clean install of Fedora 3, what in the world do I need to do to get CGI to work?

I have tried several different things mentioned in other threads on this forum and others alike. All to no avail. I keep getting "500 Internal Server Error" and different things in the error log:

"(2)No such file or directory: exec of var/

http://www/cgi-bin/nameoffile.cgi"

"(13)Permission denied: exec of var/

http://www/cgi-bin/nameoffile.cgi"

"Directory index forbidden by rule var/

http://www/html"

"Can't open perl script "\r": no such file or directory"

Those are the main ones.

My scenario? I am the only user of this machine and do not intend to have more. My html files are located in /home/user/web/. My cgi files are located in /var/

http://www/cgi-bin/.

Simple enough for those that are familiar with linux. But I am just not getting it.

Maybe the problem lies in the fact that I am not using a VirtualHost? Following a thread I found elswhere, I pretty much kept the standard httpd.conf file that was installed. Only a few changes were made. Such as the default /var/

http://www/html/

directory.

I am starting from scratch in the hopes of getting it right. As it is now, I can access all of my html pages and have FTP access set up to transfer files from WinBlows to the server. Those work great.

I 99% sure it's not a problem with the coding inside the scripts, they work fine on W2K (and yes, I changed them to #!usr/bin/perl).

If anyone has a clue as to what I am doing wrong here, please let me know what it is. SELinux is set to allow cgi as well and the scripts themselves have been chmoded 777

Hello all,

I figured out what the problem is. The error "Can't open perl script "\r": no such file or directory" is telling me that the script I am trying to load has carriage returns in it. This is caused by the fact that the script was composed on a windows machine. I re-wrote the file using "vi" on Linux and all works fine now.
