What's wrong with my SQL here?

mysql> alter table perlDesk_calls add realtime datetime default NOW();
ERROR 1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'NOW()' at line 1

You can't use a function in a DEFAULT clause, only a literal.

You might take a look at the columntype TIMESTAMP (
