Purpose: Simple file transfers from old Laptop (Win 98SE) to new Desktop (Win XPPro). Not sharing internet
Connection: Crossover cable thru NICs
Situation: I have connected my laptop to desktop using crossover. I have made IP Static at 192.168.0.1(desktop) and 192.168.0.2(laptop). Subnet Mask is same 255.255.255.0 at both.
Enable file sharing on both PCs
Desktop finally saw Laptop on network, but does not see the drives on laptop. On the other hand, Laptop refuses to see desktop on network.
Pinged both PCs, connection seems, normal pings returned in <10ms

Any suggetions?

Try using the network connection wizard from the xp machine. I had a weird problem a while ago where a printer that was on an XP box would not be seen by the Win98. Everything (share, security) was configured properly. Finally as a last resort I ran the wizard and created the disk which I loaded on the win98 machine and it worked.

Networknewbie,

The sequence of events is everything. Try running the Network connection wizard again, from the 'server' PC 1st then the client PC. Then re-boot both machines starting the server PC 1st and the client PC 2nd.
