A number of files named "core" have appeared in various places on our Red Hat 6.0 server (including a very alarming looking bomb icon on the desktop!). What on earth are they? Can we delete them?
Thanks,
When a program crashs or does something the kernel doesn't like it does a core dump. This is a snapshot of the registers, buffers etc.

The core file is usually written into the pwd of the user causing the problem, not the directory containing the program. The first step is to track down the program causing the problem. If the trouble isn't obvious then you need to do some bit bashing with the information in the core file.

Or you could ignore them, which is what most people do ;-}
Michael Regan
mregan@bccs-ca.com
<a href= Cat Computer Systems
Black Cat Computer Systems build Linux servers and work
stations for the small office. Our systems feature the AMD
line of processors. They are an excellent balance of price,
performance and reliability.
Oh, right. Not having been brought up on unix it's what I would call a "dump".
Thanks, John Connolly

By the way as RH6 starts gnome or enlightment it causes a core dump with you not having to do a thing, but if you chose to start a kde session there is no core dump.

Don't know what the proplem is but it is todo with gnome.
KDE is fine.
Simon Jones
sijones_uk@yahoo.com
<a href= Allandale Youth Works
God am good!!! and good lookin :)
