What's the story with Google Mail (gmail)

Hi, folks.

I am looking to find out what the story is with gmail. I see a lot of people have gmail addresses now, but as far as I can tell it is some kind of an "invitation only" signup.

How does this work? I don't see any info on mail.google.com or on google.com as to how to get an invite. I see some groups where you can send people your email address and beg for an invitation, which I am hesitant to do since I remain largely spam free by not publishing my address.

Am I the only one that finds this wierd?

Hi again.

OK, I looked at it again and found you can sign up using a cell phone number if the cell phone can receive text messages. They say US only but I am not in the US and it worked anyway (I guess because my CC is +1).

I still find it a bit bizarre, but what the hay, it's working.
