What's the range of file descriptors I can use? 1

I read somewhere that I can only use file descriptor numbers 4-9. Then I read somewhere else that I can use up to 20 file descriptors.

Which one is right?

linux is bsd-like
look at ??kernel??/config there should be a cfg-file to [re]build the kernel
at least you have 64 fd, my be 128 or more
why if you are learnig scripts, you don't try something

grep -i open /usr/include/limits.h
grep -i max the-same-file gives interesting infos. vox clamantis in deserto.
