What's the problem with Paging Systems? Now considered the enemy in Retail stores.... 1

So we've come a long way since the dual non related Intercom and old 1A2 key systems in retail stores. Remember the days we had Aiphone intercoms and separate Western Electric 1A2 phone setups in our stores? Even worse, a 1A2 system with microphones in stores. EVEN worse was Kmart and some other retailers still had microphones/Aiphones on their counters even though they had a first generation Norstar system that could do the paging and intercom.....

I think I noticed the integrated telephone paging system revolution about 1983 when my local elementary school had me do the morning annoucements on a Dukane Nortel SL-1 telephone that could speak with the schools telephone system, it was pretty cool. ATT came out with the Merlin system in 1983 that could do both paging and intercom....maybe a few retailers caught on at the time, but not many. Then came Dominick's/Omni Superstore in Chicagoland in 1985. They really revolutionized the market with using a ROLM Redwood system with integrated intercom and paging. Very high tech at a time when most Retailers were still using the old split system technique.

Then throughout the late 1980's reatilers left and right simplified their telecommunciations platforms in their stores and provided cost savings across the board by utilizing their telephone systems integrated with their PA systems....retailers such as:

TJ Maxx went from 1A2/Aiphone to TIE, then Norstar
KMart went from 1A2/Mic to Comdial, then Norstar
Marshalls went 1A2/Mic to Delta/Lanier/Toshiba
Dominick's (Chicagoland) went from 1A2 Intercom to ROLM then Meridian 1 Option 11
Jewel Osco went from 1A2/Aiphone to Toshiba then to Norstar
Walgreens went from 1A2/Red Line Green Line to Norstar now Cisco

The retailer list making this cost savings trend went on and on and on throughout the late 1980's and 1990's.
Yes there are still some Ma and Pa's that still live and die with Aiphone intercoms but they are generally gone and I don't know how they stay in business.

My point? A lot of radio/intercom/headset people have hit the market with Brittney Spears headsets and are convincing retailers to go back and buy a seperate system for paging by using walkie talkies or two way radios. All of that work in the past 20 years to simplify paging and in store communications has been thrown down the toilet so retailers such as Target, Giant Food, Defunct Borders Books, Dick's sporting goods, Best Buy and others can spend extra money using 2 systems when one will do the job.

How?

Use wireless phones that tie into the store's telephone systems and utilize both the paging system and wireless such as Meijer does. Most important calls are directed through to the wireless phones, but occasionally an important annoucement, maybe about one every 5 minutes is paged over the Avaya PA system.

Also, in stores that have paging systems, employ a paging "script" such as Nordstrom. Take the time to train the employees to page cleanly and effectively. Train them to depress the "RLS" key so convienently installed on the ever so popular Norstar phones. With a little work, the paging system doesn't have to be an enemy.

I think it's bull crap when I ran across a publication from Polycom touting their Spectralink phones eliminated "disruptive overhead paging" from the Giant Grocery stores. Since when is it annoying to hear annoucements at a grocery store? It's maybe 5% of the population that hates it. I for one like to hear employees working hard and urgently to meet my needs as a customer. It's part of the experience and excitement of big box retailing. Even Wal-Mart known for it's fast pace retailing and energetic stores has eliminated overhead paging.

My point, don't let some in store Madonna/Brittney Spears/Old Navy touting headset people make you waste un-necessary money with 2 systems! Otherwise you are just going back to the 1970's 1A2/Aiphone combo systems......

I hate it.
I really don't care if Dave has a call on line one, or that someone needs to go to clothing to help out Mrs Miggins. I rank it along with piped music and announcements telling me that I can get lottery tickets or there is 10% of bottles of bleach.
Maybe I just prefer to go shopping to get shopping and not "enjoy" the customer experience.

Robert Wilensky:
We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.

the headsets are great for the till runners (I don't need to know someone needs a price check) but general paging is still required otherwise how will i know what items have just been reduced.
I also like to hear the call for all till trained staff as so I can see that the "one in front" policy is not just marketing hype

the bigest problem is the (lack of ) management on who does the paging, often it is incoherent because it is made by someon with a deep voice & thick accent. customer announcements are important & should be treated like all other forms of advertising not just 'Palmed off' of the most junior member of staff.

A Maintenance contract is essential, not a Luxury.
Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

We have overhead paging in our office. Personally I don't like it, but with four different ways to reach me it really isn't relevant anymore. When shopping I'd rather hear overhead music that 'cleanup in aisle 7' or 'blue light special on widgets until 1 PM'. But to each their own. Technology evolves every day and some things that seemed so relevant in days past may have been superceded by other methods.

I believe paging technology was based on more business needs then some Walmart setting.
i.e. a manufacturing plant will have more paging needs then any store will ever need.

However with wireless technology their is almost no need for paging like their was before.

I also do not like to here the pages every 45 secs (every time a customer phones the store and needs help).
Sure maybe if they don't answer their cordless once in awhile then its ok or like you say an important page.

Up here the Wal-Marts and Canadian Tires had or still have Nortel Norstar or BCM with Companion wireless for the most part but starting to see Cisco systems and walkie talkies a little more often.

I would rather they open another bloody till or have an extra body floating around for help then make it sound like they are working hard via pages.

Here at the #1 Pharmacy in the USA we are switching from Norstar to Cisco as observed in our newer stores.

The stores with Norstar phones have constant paging.

The Cisco phones and wireless phones have the ability to page, but since there are wireless phones, annoying things like "Price Check on Tampax" or "I need change at Register 4" are eliminated because the cashiers can call the manager. Paging is still necessary to call for register help or paging an employee without a wireless phone. Paging is also used for security annoucements and promotional annoucements. It's used "as a last resort" unlike Target where it has been eliminated completely. That way only the "good" pages are left to being broadcast. They also have tried eliminated paging customers with prescriptions ready, but some customers have fought back, and our management has allowed paging if the customer requests it. Also in 3 level stores, which we just opened one in an old bank in Chicago, paging the prescription ready annoucements is essential to customer service, say if a customer is on the 3rd floor and the RX is in the basement.

For anyone who has ever been to Nordstrom, they take paging to a new level. They page everything, BUT, they say it very elegantly. Imagine a lady with a beautiful British accent. She will say "Joey Smith, 54" once and crisp.

Curly, I should say that you Canadians are immensely well trained on paging on your Meridian phones in Canada. I can't think of one time from my many travels to visit family in Toronto and visiting Shoppers, Canadian Tire, and Zellers, the employees have not used RLS when they page. Everywhere here in the USA people abuse that feature and they crack down the phones super loud. I remember Borders Books had a statement "Keep the Peace, Use Release" before they switched to headsets.

In regards to the Cisco phones, I will say we have feedback issues with the wireless phones and the PA systems. You have to hold the wireless phones about a foot from your mouth to make an audible page, so most people stick with the 79xx series desk phones.

I work at a manufacturing company, so the pages go on ALL DAY!
Most people are not at their desks with any regularity, myself included. Of course, they can also email me, call my cell phone, etc.
We have a Cisco Call Manager system here, which replaced a 3COM NBX. The NBX had a page port that connected right to the amplifier rack, but with the Cisco we had to install a VIKING FXI-1 that connects to an FXS port on the Cisco 2911 Voice Gateway.

Our Cisco here at WAGS has any annoying #3 DTMF dial beep that announces before the page and I've challenged our ESS group to turn it off, but no one knows how.

Speaking of Shoppers, they have cool system with a beeper they give you, you go about shopping in the mall/or plaza and when your order is ready it beeps.

Cisco is not the issue with paging, its speaker placement vs person paging.
i.e you should not page while standing under a speaker or this is what gives you feedback.
Best to stand further away from the speaker or page from a strategically placed phone on a column.

For years cardboard or an old rag was the choice for covering Paging horns in the Walgreen stockrooms until someone realized it wasn't good to put a Meridian/Cisco set right underneath the horn!

Dominick's, a division of Safeway, in Chicago tested feedback eliminators in their stores with the BCM's, but soon took them out as it was confusing the store associates....I don't think that's a valid reason for removing them, but I guess they wanted the instant paging.

Have you ever noticed the delay in paging with IP phones? There is about a 1/2 second delay in the voice being transmitted across to the paging system.

Working in a hospital we do our best to reduce overhead paging for patient comfort, but we still use it for emergencies, public service announcements and the like. What we are using to minimize our overhead paging now is our cell phones. Most of the physicians and support staff carry cell phones now, or spectralink or something along those lines. They used to carry pocket pagers for this purpose, but they were frustrated with needing to have multiple devices on their belts, and when you get paged on a pager you have no clue what they want or what the urgency is unless they add a -911 or something at the end. We purchased a system called PageGate from notepage.com. For an $800 one-time cost we bought a system licensed to page up to 5000 phones that works with the majority of the carriers. With PageGate you have a little client that sits on your PC or a website you can hit (an any number of other ways to interface to it) where you choose your recipients, type a message and hit send. The recipients get a text message that tells them what you want, and when a 10-digit callback number is provided they only need to hit send or click on the number o return the call. It's pretty slick, and has reduced our overhead paging by almost 80%. I don't really mind it in stores. I usually mentally tune it out anyway unless some keyword in what they are saying grabs my attention....

Our Kmart had the Intercom/Paging/Muzak system and a 1A2 system.
Unfortunately, one day when I was about to do a spot announcement 'Flashing Blue Light' an assistant manager happened to see a beautiful woman enter the store. He rushed to the checkout intercom and pressed the button for the stockroom at exactly the same moment I pressed the button to do the microphone announcement. I don't know what crosspoint failed to link the intercom with the paging but before I could get a word in, The whole store heard the most enthusiastic spot announcement ever heard, "Hey Gare! Check out the Midway, quick!"
To which the checkouts started asking, "What to checkout where?"
Gare made it about 1/2 up the midway when he happened to see the M1 waiting and hastily retreated to the stock room.

"The phone was working fine before it knocked over my coffee.

Good thing they didn't say something else.

Back in the day I used to do test pages at clients sites with "Attention all Kmart Shoppers, we will be closing in 5 minutes".....they always got a kick out of that.

Somebody just found a 1A2 PS still on the wall in the utility room with 25 years of dust on it.

We turned the Paging tone off that pre announced the pages at our stores at 3 locations with Cisco 79xx phones and the Associates have claimed paging is now 100 percent less annoying, as it just blends in, in the background. So preannounce for paging isn't a good thing in retail stores....
