What's the Norm in Email Hosting?

Hi,
I'm looking to get a new web host that offers managed web hosting.

What do most companies do in terms of email hosting - do they have their managed host perform email hosting for them, or do they simply use their internal email server and only have the managed host perform basic SMTP/POP and mail relaying for them?

I'm thinking about going the latter route because I don't anticipate our redesigned site generating a lot of email traffic.

Again, is this a feasible solution?

Packages vary, but you'd normally expect to get a number of POP3 mailboxes that you can set up to receive mail, in addition to the ability to redirect mail to other accounts if you choose.
