Hi all,

I would like to know what's the difference between zip and gzip in linux. I have seen so many package of software which is packed with gzip rather than zip.

Thank you for your attention

Best regards,
Jeff Li

Assuming you don't mean the technical differences in the compression methods, the main difference is that zip packages a bunch of files into one compressed archive, while gzip compresses each file individually.

zip is more used for Windows/Dos compatibility- if you were sending stuff to a Windows user, zip is what you would want to use-.
