Whats the difference between WINS and DNS

dns resolves Fully qualified domain names (FQDN) like:

workstation1@mycompany.com

Wins resolves NetBIOS names only and has a 15 digit limitation like:

workstation1

If the name of the workstation were to be:

workstation1234567 then wins would only resolve:

workstation1234

WINS is for registering and resolving names on a Microsoft network. DNS is what the internet (and many LANs) uses to resolve hosts and domains. For example, when you type into your web browser, DNS resolves that address to an IP address. When you send an email, DNS tells the mail server where to send that mail.

To correct Stiddy, it is not possible to enter in a NetBIOS name that is greater than 15 character in Windows.

To further correct Stiddy, the FQDN would look like this:

workstation1.mycompany.com

The @ symbol is not allowed in a FQDN.

opps, I agree with all, sorry for the misdirection....
