What's the difference between a SIP and H.323 phone?

I may even have posted the question incorrectly but I don't know what is the difference between the two.

They use different protocols for call setup.

Sort of like asking what is the difference between gasoline and diesel - not much, but they are most certainly not interchangeable.

Good luck

So there's no benefit or disadvantages of using one or the other?

This is my personal view, but that article was a bit self important (the only difinitive article!). Always take things like that with a pinch of salt.

Again this is my point of view.
That article makes out pretty much like SIP is crap and H323 is God.

Well from my experience, I've found SIP to be far more flexible than h323. Granted I haven't touched a h323 system for a couple of years, so it may be better now, but what I suffered really put me off.

I found it a pig to get through firewalls and using dhcp was a pain in the backside. SIP gave me a huge amount of flexabilty. I found h323 to be better when connecting fixed points e.g server to server, but I don't even bother with that now.

I have managed to get every SIP device to work with any other with no issues.
I also like to point out one thing, volume. Take a peek at how many SIP devices are out there.
h323 has it's uses especially server to server, but me, I prefer SIP any day.
I'm sure people will disagree here and I'm sure they can raise some good points, but as I said, this is my personal opinion.

Stu..

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

Yeah.. sorry.. I didn't read the article.. I just grabbed one from google :D You should read everything you can find but I do agree SIP is the easier of the two and I haven't had any compatibility issues that weren't worked out either.

H.323 takes the old fashioned "telco" way of doing things.

SIP takes the new fashioned "Web" way of doing things.

Both are more than adequate.

Odds are SIP will win.

Why, because H.323 is a weird obscure thing that very few people understand. Sort of like SS7 or ISND signaling.

SIP on the other hand is simple, easy to understand, and more important clicks with anyone who is used to HTML and IP.

Big drawback of H323 is that it does not support Hold/Transfer

SIP does not explicitly support it either but there is capacity in the protocol to do it.
