Dear Greater Cisco Intellect,

Thank you to everyone that responded to my previous inquiry "Are my cisco books too old?".

So I'm going to get something from the cisco press. They seem to offer 2 sets of materials for the CCNA exam:
CCNA Preparation Library, ISBN 1-58705-184-2
This value-priced, two-book bundle contains the two self-study guides for the CCNA, INTRO and ICND exams.

CCNA Certification Library, ISBN 1-58720-095-3
This value-priced, two-book bundle contains the two exam certification guides for those candidates taking the comprehensive 640-801 exam or following the two-step INTRO and ICND exam path.

Can really see what the diff. is b/n the 2 sets of materials. It seems that the Prep. Lib. books are not as comprehensive as the Cert. materials.

Any recommendations?

The CCNA Preperation Library includes the two self-study guides.

I have not read either of the Self Study books, but to me it seems they are geared towards someone new to the field, to teach you what you need to know for the test.

I read both of the Exam Certification books, and they seem to be aimed towards someone who has experience and familiarity, but needs to brush up on some things and get deeper into their understanding.

I studied the Todd L book first, then brushed up with the Exam Cert. guides. I have several years of networking experience, but on Nortel equipment.

I recomend studying from at least 2 unrelated sources for any certification if possible. There were things covered in each book that werent mentioned in the other.

Hope this helps, and maybe someone who has read the Self-Study guides can comment on their material.

mgodinez,
I agree, I have always used the Sybex book on the subject and then followed it up with one of the Cisco Press books.

Cisco Press tends to go into great detail, this helps if you plan to work in that area, Sybex is geared more towards what you need to know for the test.

You also should get some hands-on work with a Cisco router/switch lab or at least lots of work on a sim. The Cisco Press/Boson one is GREAT !!!

Cisco exams are very hard to do by just reading a book, hands on helped me pass the CCNA, CCDA and Advanced Routing CCNP test 1st time.

Good luck !!
