On my PC (AMD processor, WinXP), When I have the speakers on I can always detect a slight ticking, unless I am playing music, when the ticking is covered by the volume of the music. The rate of ticking is about two beats to the second, I reckon. Any ideas about what's to blame and how to silence it? It really is there, I'm not imagining it!

What kind of ticking noise? Steady once or twice a second - power supply to the speakers. Random hissing noise - open microphone or other input source. Conflict with other program - re-install audio drivers.

Try a different speaker setup. A cheap $10.00 setup should work for test. Won't sound great, but good enough for trouble-shooting. Borrowing a set (speakers and power supply) from a friend would be great.

Also try adjusting the position of the speaker's audio cable that runs to the "audio out" port on the PC. It might be laying too close to the monitor or some other type of electromagnetic device that's causing interference.
