whats standard for page download time

How fast should a page down load. I working on a site and my pages will download at 5 seconds on a 56. Is that good enough or should it be faster

That should be way good enough most recommendations I've seen recommend page loading of less than 20 seconds on a 56k

I have been told a rule of thumb is for the home page of a site be no bigger than 25Kb.

That can be a big ask but will ensure fast loading even for slow modems
