P4/2.8 Ghz processor with Abit IS7 E MoBo. 512MB RAM. and a (supposedly)200GB Western Digital HDD operating XP Pro.(I have downloaded all the MS critical patches and SP1)
The BIOS shows the Hard Drive as 200GB but after installation on a single partition I have only got access to 127GB! Do I, a)need to add a value to the registry? Please help!

Appreciate the swift reply wolluf. On the case now, will let ya know how I fare.

Already answered? but a service pack 1 will cure ills.

Thanks paparazi. I already have SP1 and it makes no difference. (Do I have to activate something?)That was my first port of call.
wolluf, tried your plan and got completley bogged down, Now at wits end. Surely I shouldn't have to spend huge amounts of dough on the latest gear only to re-write the whole registry. (Well thats what it seems like.)A pal just loaded a 300GB directly on to his machine and Bingo! I am still stuck!!!

I way I read it is that it must be partitioned by XPSP1 install to enable 48bit, seems flakey otherwise!

Andy.

Cheers satrow n freestone. Disk Managment shows 127.99GB running healthy on NTFS with 62.32GB unallocated. With Ref to the SP1 issue you raise, I have the original (2000)XP Pro CD, and have to download SP 1 after loading the OS. I am beginning to realise that this version is not 48 bit enabled, and thereby lies the problemo!

There is a way of 'slipstreaming' the SP1 onto the XP data then burning an updated (SP1) disk. Means you have to have an OS installed + 133Mb of SP1 + folder full of XP CD contents + instructions (available for EzCdCreator and Nero) + CD burner.. If you are up for a challenge, try this
Andy.

Nice one satrow. I don't mind a challenge. Hold on to my hat,I'm going in!

24-bit LBA is limited to 137GB, not 127. Are we sure that's the problem here? Making sure you're on 48-bit is good, but unless you are reading the # of bytes incorrectly, then it doesn't sound like the cause.

Aside from resetting the partition and starting from scratch, consider going with a cheap solution like Partition Magic 7.x to rearrange the partition without having to start over.

cdogg - I think the limit is c. 137,000,000,000 bytes, which pans out to 127.6 GB (using the 1024 cubed definition of a GB).

Frank - slipstreaming is straightforward - good luck!

wolluf - good point, not sure how that escaped my attention. I guess I was under the impression that the 137GB figure was literally 137GB, and not 137,000,000,000 as hard drive manufacturers quote.

Guys! Slipstreaming awayyyyyyy. Heh Heh. I now have 190779.7 MB of space to fill on a lovely jubbly HDD. (Bit excitable I know!)......Thanks again for all the help.
