What's the best distro to install from if I don't have a CD rom drive?

I have a 486/66 with 16 MB that I want to install text-only Linux onto, but since I can't get any CD-ROM drive to work on it, the only way would be to start install off floppy then install off the network (or install on another 486?)

Also I have another harddrive with Redhat 7.2 that I don't need, would I be able to run that in the 486 by recompiling the kernel for the 486 cpu?

Also the Redhat 7.2 box said a "pentium class computer with 32 MB" is required to run Linux in text only mode, but I find that hard to believe - I've heard that linux will run on a 486 with no problem, unless the 2.4 kernel requires a pentium?

All I want to load is perl, apache, php, lynx, ftp, telnet, samba so it should work, right?

thanks!

Are you sure you want to be running all that on a 486? Normally you would only use a 486 to one dedicated purpose, like a firewall for instance.

sure why not? its just a development server for ocasional testing at home, it won't be used for production

It'll work although I wouldn't suggest running "x-windows" on it (kde, gnome etc) if you're not comfortable with mangement of linux via command line you may want something with a litte more umph

As far as the dist, it all boils down to what you like. I perfer Slackware, while others like debian, suse, RH, etc
