What'd they do to the exclude command???

Okay, in my beloved version six, all you did was select 2 overlapping objects, go up to "filter", to "pathfinder", & choose "exclude".

Now I choose the 2 objects, go to "effect", to "pathfinder", & choose "exclude". First it tells me the objects must be grouped, so I group them & try again. Nothing happens.

Have I mentioned how very, very much I hate the new Illus. versions? :( :(

please help....why do they make it so the exact same process no longer does the same thing?!
