Does anyone have a brief history of these sets and why there were released? What did they replace? Just curious....one of my favorite sets.

I think around 1885 :)

Be aware that they are not supported anymore?

I know, but I see them everywhere still.....big user is Nordstrom and Macy's/Bloomingdales. Very surprised these companies haven't upgraded to the 96xx sets.

What I also find interesting about these sets, is when they were released they were released solely for the Definity platform, for a large PBX application, not for a small system like Partner. With the release of IP Office, Avaya blurred the lines and allowed the big PBX phones to be used on a potentially very small system such as an IP Office with 6 phones and 3 analog lines.

Did these 6400 sets work on the Merlin Magix or Merlin Legend too?

No they didn't work on the Merlin Magix systems. When the Magix came out, they had those ugly 4400 series sets that were supported on IPO also.
